Aerial Slaughter —
42 horse bite the desert dust

The NZ Army and DOC have joined forces to drive another species to extinction. (New Zealanders are very good at this). Trigger happy, gun-tot'en “shoot them from the air” chopper cowboys wiped out a number of our Kaimanawa horses last month.

If DOC and the NZ Army need to go on an aerial killing spree then get some real experience, try it on their own personnel so that there is an even match — they can always hide in the heather — an opportunity not available for the defenseless mares with foals at foot who provide the Cowboys with easy target practice on the open tundra.

Kaimanawa Horses

Unfortunately the horses they chose this time were from the Northern Horse herd which are quite different from their southern counterparts. This kill may well have wiped this unique breed off the map.

I am not a mathematician but I think I can say that in terms of lbs. per square inch exerted on a Desert Road Daisy, a hoof would be lighter than a military tank.

And if DOC are so concerned about that wilderness area why aren’t they doing anything about the Heather that is suffocating the landscape?

Kaimanawa Horses

NB: The uniqueness of the Kaimanawa Horse has received very little investigation both for its anatomical differences and its wild-horse vigour. (Shades of the Arapawa Goat)!

Is DOC going to exterminate these horses before we miss another opportunity to undertake benificial Equine research?

Are we going to let another unique tourist attraction passed us (sigh!) by?

The Kaimanawa Wild Horse Welfare Trust is currently unable to meet demand for homes for these fantastic young horses. The Trust urgently needs your support and money to stop this slaughter.
